Summary Job Statement

The Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist I is responsible for providing all locations within assigned area with specialized support and oversight in the areas of OSHA, DOT, EPA. KORE, and ISO compliance, workplace and fleet safety, and environmental program management.



  • Provides assigned locations with the requisite guidance, oversight, and assistance to ensure the locations are able to safely operate in full regulatory compliance with all applicable OSHA, DOT, EPA, ISO, and KORE requirements and in a manner consistent with CCBCU policies and procedures.
  • Conducts regular OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulatory compliance audits and workplace safety, fleet safety and environmental program reviews at each assigned location. Prepares timely concise reports to the location's leadership team and appropriate division and corporate office personnel so as to remedy and/or escalate identified issues as needed on a timely basis.
  • Analyzes loss experience and related data and works with location leadership to develop location-specific plans to reduce workplace incidents, accidents, and injuries.  Assists location leadership in developing and communicating annual goals.  Uses data collected from incident, accident, and injury reports to provide division operations management with topics for safety training.
  • Collaborates with location leadership to develop a schedule of required regulatory and company-based workplace safety, fleet safety, and environmental training.  Monitors, tracks, and communicates completion of training by required associates including Supervisor and Manager Safety training and ensures that the requisite documentation has been suitably submitted and filed.
  • Collaborates with local leadership to introduce, communicate, and ensure adherence to Company Risk Management/EHS policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that emergency preparedness and evacuation drills are held regularly (at a minimum annually) and that all location personnel understand and conform with the emergency preparedness and response plan requirements.
  • Conducts regular internal workplace safety, fleet safety, and environment program reviews with each assigned location to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and all CCBCU policies and assists location management in preparing for third party audits.
  • Assists the locations with federal and state OSHA, EPA, and DOT audits, inspections, and inquiries consistent with established CCBCU policies and practices.
  • Participates in monthly safety committee meetings for all assigned locations and provides necessary guidance to ensure meetings are effective.
  • Leads workplace safety, fleet safety, and environment calls with key operations managers for all assigned locations to communicate new Risk Management/EHS programs, review impending regulatory changes, and share best practices, etc.
  • Reviews regularly with each assigned location's leadership team current workplace safety, fleet safety, and environment performance, regulatory compliance status, internal program review and/or third-party audit findings, and related action plans, etc.
  • Assist locations with determining the need for outside contractors/consultants to provide safety, security, or environmental services.  Participates in the selection process to ensure the use of qualified contractors/consultants. This responsibility is done alongside the EHS Supervisor.
  • Collaborates with other EHS Specialists, EHS Supervisors, Corporate EHS Manager, Corporate Claims Manager, Risk Management Coordinators and other key stakeholder functions (i.e. Sales, Distribution, Operations, Legal, Risk Management, Employee Relations, Finance, and Accounting, etc.) as needed to identify emerging issues and develops new performance improvement programs as needed to assist locations in sustaining a high level of workplace safety, fleet safety, and environment performance and ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Reports to the EHS Supervisor on the workplace safety, fleet safety, and environment performance and regulatory compliance status of each assigned location.
  • Monitors all incident, injury, and accident reports on a weekly basis ensuring that all incidents and accidents are accurately reported, effectively investigated by location supervisors/managers, and documented appropriately in a timely manner and actively participates in the location accident review board.
  • Reviews the findings of all third party audits and collaborates with locations to develop action plans/schedules to remediate findings and ensures that corrective actions are implemented in a timely manner consistent with the agreed upon action plan(s).
  • Internal:  Regularly interfaces and as required collaborates with location leadership teams and operating personnel, Division Directors and Vice Presidents, and key Corporate Office functions (i.e. Sales, Distribution, Operations, Risk Management, Legal, Human Resources, etc.)
  • External:  On an as needed basis will interface with regulatory agency personnel, third party auditors, trade associations, vendors, and industry peers to stay current on emerging issues, best practices, etc.


Minimum Qualifications/Requirements

  • Associate degree or equivalent from two-year College or university; or 4 to 6 years of experience.
  • Must have 1-3 years of directly related OSHA, DOT, EPA regulatory compliance experience ideally across multiple sites and a demonstrated track record of effectively working with operations management and operating personnel (including warehouse workers, PIT operators, drivers, maintenance personnel, etc.).
  • Proven capabilities in effective training program delivery are preferred. 
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and distribution EHS best practices is preferred. 
  • Must be able to effectively manage multiple priorities and plans across multiple locations. 
  • Ability to learn use of third party IT tools and working knowledge of standard MS desktop (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) are required. 
  • Must have collaborative, consultative, and team-oriented approach and be able to work equally effectively with location leadership, operating management, front line supervision, and operating personnel, while also providing the requisite oversight needed to meet assigned accountabilities.
  • Current driver's license
  • OSHA 511 highly preferred and required within one year of employment
  • Certification as a Smith System or PACE driver trainer preferred
